This information may help if the following applies to you:
Your SD card has worked normally until now
Suddenly, you can’t write to it, sometimes with an error indicating the card is mounted as read-only
Don’t worry—this issue typically doesn’t require drastic steps like reformatting the card or replacing it.
What's Going On?
This is a common Android issue. Your SD card’s File Allocation Table (FAT) likely has a minor error. When that happens, Android automatically mounts the card as read-only. Even if you unmount and remount it in Settings, it usually won’t fix the problem.
Solution 1: Reboot with Card Removed
Power off your device
Remove the SD card
Turn the device back on, then power it off again
Reinsert the SD card
Power the device back on
This quick reset often resolves the issue.
Solution 2: Repair the FAT Using a PC
Connect your device to a computer via USB
On your device, enable file transfer mode (check the USB options in the notification panel)
On your PC, open File Explorer or go to Start > Computer
Locate your SD card (it may take a moment to appear)
Right-click the SD card drive and select Properties
Open the Tools tab and click Check now under Error Checking
Select “Automatically fix file system errors,” then run the scan
When it finishes, safely disconnect your device
No files will be deleted during this process. After the repair, your SD card should be writable again.
Solution 3: Use Internal Storage Instead
As a temporary workaround, save your files to your device’s internal storage if the SD card remains read-only.
